El día 24 de Diciembre de 1803 es una fecha señalada en la historia de Alcalá del Júcar no solo por tratarse del día de nochebuena. Una de las peores catástrofes de nuestra localidad ocurrió en la nochebuena de 1803, aquí os relatamos lo ocurrido con toda la información que hemos podido recuperar de periódicos e historias (las exactitud de las cifras depende de la fuente consultada).
Ese día, Alcalá del Júcar sufrió un gran desprendimiento de parte del peñón donde se encuentra edificado el castillo, destruyendo unas 30 casas y causando 26 víctimas. Apenas sin luz pero con la esperanza de rescatar a los sobrevivientes, los vecinos de nuestro pueblo, apenas equipados con palas y picos, empezaron las tareas de rescate consiguiendo rescatar a 15 personas. Respecto a la causa del desprendimiento, algunos escritos la asignan a un temblor de tierra.Más importante que la causa del derrumbamiento es resaltar que se consiguió rescatar con vida sin apenas medios a 15 personas, que todos nuestros antepasados fueron verdaderos héroes colaborando en las tareas de búsqueda, levantando pico y pala sin descanso durante horas para salvar a sus vecinos.
Afortunadamente una catástrofe de este tipo es impensable actualmente, pero no está mal recordar a las personas que perdieron la vida y aquellas que pusieron tanto esfuerzo para que no se perdieran más vidas.
En esa época no había cámaras para atestiguar lo acontecido, pero esta instantánea puede ejemplificar ese día.
